ZFS was designed to be a next generation file system for Sun Microsystems. Canonical (maintainers of Ubuntu) see fit to include CDDL OpenZFS kernel modules with their distro. The Z File System (ZFS) was created by Matthew Ahrens and Jeff Bonwick in 2001. We accept donations to cover our ongoing costs. CDDL (Common Development and Distribution License) is a free and open-source software license.
